Lomond School Becomes First in the UK to Accept Bitcoin for Tuition Fees

Lomond School, an independent K–12 institution based in the west of Scotland, has become the first in the United Kingdom to accept tuition fees paid in Bitcoin. The announcement, made on 11 April, marks a major shift in how schools approach financial innovation, especially amid growing interest from international families.
The decision comes after repeated requests from overseas parents and agents, according to principal Claire Chisholm. “We consistently embrace innovation and adapt to changing times. This step is a response to what our parents have been asking for,” she stated.
Accepting cryptocurrency enables the school to offer international and domestic students a modern, contactless payment option. Particularly for global families, Bitcoin offers a solution to issues like currency volatility and international transfer delays. As it is not tied to any government or inflation rate, Bitcoin presents a more predictable option for many families paying from abroad.
To manage currency risk, Lomond School will initially convert Bitcoin payments directly into British pounds using FCA-registered partners CoinCorner and Musquet. The school also adheres strictly to anti-money laundering protocols and UK financial regulations.
Chisholm further explained that, beyond just payment processing, the school plans to incorporate Austrian economics and decentralised technology into its curriculum. This will allow students to explore topics such as innovation, fairness, and financial autonomy in real-world contexts.
The move comes as UK independent schools face new taxation laws that apply VAT to tuition fees—leading many schools to raise prices. The increased costs could deter international enrolments, prompting schools like Lomond to seek out more accessible and flexible options.
Scotland’s Lomond School has a history of trailblazing decisions, including being the first mixed boarding school in the country. It also responded to prior family requests by offering the International Baccalaureate programme.
This latest step cements Lomond’s place at the forefront of educational innovation in the UK.
