Egypt and France have taken significant strides to enhance academic collaboration, signing a series of new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) during a three-day French delegation visit to Cairo, following French President Emmanuel Macron’s trip earlier this month.

The renewed cooperation builds upon the higher education framework agreement signed between the two nations in July 2024, which introduced dual degrees in 15 scientific fields and a scholarship initiative for 100 Egyptian PhD students to study in France from 2025 to 2028.

Nine MoUs were signed between the Université Française d’Égypte (UFE) and top French universities, covering disciplines such as business management, engineering, political sciences, and linguistics. UFE president Mohamed Rochdi noted that UFE remains the only Egyptian university offering French degrees accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education without students needing to study abroad.

“These MoUs represent a strengthening of existing ties and the launch of new joint programmes, all aimed at transferring French academic expertise to Egypt,” Rochdi said.

French institutions including Lyon 3, Cergy, Littoral, Poitiers, and Aix Marseille also signed agreements promoting the exchange of students, academic staff, and administrators. In the K–12 sector, the Egyptian and French governments announced plans to establish 100 new francophone schools throughout Egypt, diversifying the country’s international education options beyond the British curriculum.

The partnership also touches on emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Hossam Rashad, senior director at ESLSCA University, emphasised that cooperation with France and Europe is key to advancing Egypt’s global competitiveness.

“Such alliances not only raise academic standards but also prepare Egypt’s institutions to thrive in an interconnected world,” he remarked.

By embracing these international efforts, Egypt is positioning itself as a forward-thinking education hub in the region, committed to global standards and innovation.
