Coventry University has become the first UK higher education institution to receive formal approval to establish a campus in India’s Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). The landmark decision was confirmed during the 13th UK-India Economic and Financial Dialogue held at the London Stock Exchange on 9 April.

The move is a significant step in enhancing the United Kingdom’s educational footprint in India. GIFT City, a flagship smart city project in Gujarat, is rapidly becoming a hub for global finance and innovation — now poised to be a centre for world-class education as well.

The announcement follows Coventry University’s earlier efforts to strengthen its presence in the region. In December, the institution inaugurated a hub in New Delhi to facilitate recruitment, admissions, and partnerships across India.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Latham CBE expressed optimism about the future of the initiative. “We are delighted that approval has been given to commence the set-up process for Coventry University GIFT City and know that many students will benefit from the high-quality education we can offer over the years to come.”

The newly approved campus will initially offer postgraduate programmes, including International Business Management and Business and Finance, with plans to expand the course list shortly.

The campus opening has been welcomed as a milestone for UK-India academic ties. Alison Barrett, Director India at the British Council, noted, “It emphasises our shared commitment to the internationalisation of education, as highlighted in the National Education Policy 2020.”

With a £1 billion investment behind the project, Coventry’s GIFT City campus is expected to welcome students this month, joining the growing list of British institutions expanding into the Indian market. Both Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Surrey have also announced intentions to set up in the region.

The campus signifies a new era of transnational education between the UK and India, offering Indian students British-quality education without leaving their country.
