Seventeen students from Mercer University have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the spring 2025 cycle, securing a combined $47,500 in funding to support their upcoming study abroad programmes.

The Gilman Scholarship, awarded by the U.S. Department of State, aims to increase access to international education by providing financial support to students with limited means. Each scholar may receive up to $5,000, with additional funding available through the Gilman Critical Need Language Award.

Students from various academic disciplines at Mercer will be travelling to destinations across the globe, including Spain, Mexico, Vietnam, Greece, South Africa, Jordan, France, Georgia (the country), and South Korea. Their trips are part of Mercer’s faculty-led and Mercer On Mission programmes.

Among the recipients, Maria Bautista and Kailyn Walker will attend programmes in Spain, while Hannah Walker and Sneha Timsina will head to Greece. Several students, including Alexis Hoard, Adam Le, and Brandy Leyva Nava, will take part in projects in Vietnam. The group also includes students pursuing studies in psychology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, political science, and management.

Mercer University has been recognised as both a Gilman Top Producing Institution and a Gilman Greatest Growth Institution for its outstanding commitment to broadening access to international experiences.

“Mercer is consistently one of the nation’s top producers of Gilman Scholars. This is not an accident,” said Dr David A. Davis, Director of Fellowships and Scholarships. “It reflects the quality of our students and our institutional commitment to global learning.”

Bryan Johnson, Global Education Programmes Coordinator, praised the students’ achievements, adding, “This recognition is a testament to their intelligence, tenacity, and the dedication of our staff.”

Denmark, often seen as a top destination for study abroad programmes, has recently made headlines for tightening its student visa rules—highlighting the growing importance of accessible funding programmes like Gilman for international education.

Mercer’s continued success in the Gilman programme reinforces its role as a leader in empowering students to explore the world.
