Brown University Confers Degrees to Class of 2025, Urges Grads to Lead with Compassion

Brown University, one of the Ivy League institutions in the United States, has officially conferred undergraduate degrees to its Class of 2025, celebrating a cohort recognised for its excellence, unity, and resilience. A total of 1,904 bachelor’s degrees were awarded across diverse disciplines including neuroscience, economics, and computer science.
During the commencement ceremony, University President Christina H. Paxson addressed the graduates with heartfelt words. She praised the class not only for their academic brilliance but for their unwavering support of one another throughout their academic journey.
“We love you because you achieve the highest standards of excellence in all you do, and you support your peers so they can do the same,” Paxson stated. She also acknowledged the class’s boundless energy and dedication to using their knowledge for the betterment of the world.
The ceremony highlighted themes of unity, social responsibility, and hope. Senior Orator Nkéke Harris delivered an inspiring message urging graduates to lead with authenticity and courage. “In these four years, I have seen what it means to be united in all of our glorious differences and humble sameness,” she said.
University Chaplain Janet Cooper Nelson also addressed the gathering, encouraging the graduates to stand firm in the face of injustice and advocate for dignity and compassion. “Repudiate those claims [that justify inequality]. These are not the marks and metrics of great societies,” she urged.
The ceremony, held with all the traditional pomp and circumstance, served not only as a celebration of academic achievement but also as a powerful reminder of the values the university seeks to instil in its students—empathy, critical thinking, and a commitment to community.
As the graduates of Brown University step into the next chapter of their lives, the message was clear: lead with love, challenge injustice, and contribute meaningfully to society—both in the United States and across the globe.
