Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology has announced a strategic partnership with Barzan University College (BUC) in Qatar, becoming the first Australian institution to offer its qualifications in the Gulf country.

The new collaboration will see Swinburne degrees, including programmes in computer science and business, delivered at BUC’s Doha campus starting from October 2025.

In a statement, Swinburne hailed the initiative as a “huge milestone”, aligning with its vision of becoming a globally connected and accessible university. “Our partnership with BUC is built on a shared mission to empower students with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed for lifelong success,” said Swinburne vice-chancellor, Pascale Quester.

BUC, a newly launched private higher education institution, aims to foster innovation and leadership among Qatar’s youth. It positions itself as a forward-thinking college that offers globally relevant education and industry-aligned training in a supportive and creative environment.

Hassan Al-Derham, vice-chairman of BUC and former president of Qatar University, expressed confidence that this partnership will support Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which aspires to transform the nation into a knowledge-based economy.

“We are not just offering degrees – we are opening doors to global classrooms, powerful ideas, and future careers,” Al-Derham remarked.

BUC’s leadership also includes prominent figures such as Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, a former Prime Minister of Qatar, underlining the institution’s strong national backing.

Swinburne’s entry into Qatar marks a significant step in expanding Australian education’s global footprint, particularly in the Middle East. The partnership aims to give Qatari and international students access to top-tier Australian qualifications without the need to leave the region.

The courses delivered will incorporate Swinburne’s tech-rich curriculum, focusing on practical skills and career readiness – key components for thriving in Qatar’s evolving economy.

This collaboration is expected to play a vital role in diversifying and strengthening Qatar’s higher education sector in line with its long-term development goals.
