Hungary Offers Tuition-Free Higher Education with Monthly Stipend

Hungary has announced an attractive opportunity for international students through its flagship Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship. The programme allows eligible students to pursue higher education in the European country without paying tuition fees, while also receiving financial and healthcare support.
The scholarship is available to students from countries that have a bilateral agreement with Hungary, including India, where nominations are facilitated by the Ministry of Education and other authorised bodies. With education costs rising worldwide, this initiative offers a rare chance for students to gain a European degree at minimal expense.
Under the scheme, scholars are entitled to a full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of their chosen programme. They also receive a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (approximately ₹22,000) to help cover living expenses, in addition to access to Hungary’s public healthcare system.
Eligibility criteria require applicants to be citizens of a partner country, at least 18 years old at the time of admission, and academically qualified for their selected programme. For instance, a bachelor’s degree is mandatory when applying for a master’s course.
Applications must be submitted through the official portal, stipendiumhungaricum.hu, along with a motivation letter, academic transcripts, proof of language proficiency, and a valid passport. In parallel, applicants must also register with the sending partner organisation in their home country.
The scholarship is open across 30 universities in Hungary, covering a wide range of disciplines from engineering and natural sciences to arts, humanities, and social sciences. According to officials, the initiative aims not only to internationalise Hungarian higher education but also to strengthen academic and cultural ties with partner nations.
For Indian students, this could be a valuable opportunity to access quality European education at a fraction of the usual cost, backed by financial and healthcare support. Detailed guidelines, eligibility requirements, and timelines are available on the official website.
