IELTS ‘Technical Glitch’ Sparks Global Score Chaos and Apology

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has issued a significant apology following the discovery of a “technical issue” that led to incorrect scores being issued to thousands of test-takers worldwide. The revelation has thrown countless study and immigration plans into chaos, with candidates receiving revised results—some higher, some lower—up to two years after their original test dates.
The co-owners of IELTS, the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, have confirmed that a glitch primarily affected the scoring of the Reading and Listening components for a small proportion of exams taken between August 2023 and September 2025. While they insist that over 99% of tests were unaffected, the consequences for the individuals concerned are far-reaching.
Candidates across the globe, including significant numbers in Vietnam, have expressed shock and distress after being notified of the unexpected changes via email. For those who received an upward correction, the news, while ultimately positive, comes too late if they had already missed out on university admissions or a job requiring a higher score. Conversely, those whose scores have been downgraded now face the grim prospect of having their visa or university acceptance scrutinised, potentially jeopardising their futures.
IELTS has moved to offer support, including a choice between a full refund of the test fee or a free re-sit, and has pledged to send explanation letters to affected recognising organisations like universities and immigration bodies. They have also assured the public that the technical fault has been completely resolved, and robust measures are in place to prevent a recurrence.
This unfortunate episode serves as a powerful reminder of the profound human impact that even minor technical errors can have within high-stakes, globally recognised testing systems. While IELTS’s public apology and offer of restitution are a necessary step, the emotional toll and missed opportunities for candidates who relied on their initial, incorrect scores are incalculable. It will take time, transparency, and concerted effort to rebuild the trust shaken by this deeply regrettable glitch.
