From 3 November 2025, eligible international students in New Zealand will be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week during term time, an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours.

The change forms part of the government’s broader strategy to grow the international education sector sustainably, helping students earn more while studying and boosting the country’s attractiveness as a destination.

However, alongside the increased work-rights, authorities are sounding a clear note of caution: employers must not take advantage of students by over-working them, under-paying them, or treating them unfairly. The move recognises that with greater permitted hours, the risk of exploitation rises.

Students already holding a visa with the 20-hour work limit can apply to vary their conditions to access the extra five hours — though permission is required and some may choose to wait until their next visa renewal.

This development offers a meaningful boost for those studying abroad in New Zealand — more flexibility to earn, but also a reminder to stay informed of rights and safeguards.
