New Horizons: UK to Rejoin Erasmus+ Exchange Programme in 2027

In a move that has sparked widespread celebration across the education sector, the UK government has officially confirmed that Britain will rejoin the European Union’s Erasmus+ scheme in 2027. This landmark agreement marks the end of a six-year hiatus following Brexit and signals a significant “reset” in relations between London and Brussels.
For thousands of young people, this is more than just a policy shift; it is a restoration of hope. The deal ensures that from the 2027/28 academic year, British university students, apprentices, and vocational learners will once again have access to funded study and work placements across Europe. Early government estimates suggest that over 100,000 people could benefit in the first year alone.
The decision comes after months of intensive negotiations. Ministers have secured a 30% discount on the standard financial contribution, with the UK set to pay approximately £570 million for the initial year. This “bespoke” arrangement aims to balance the books while ensuring British learners from all backgrounds; particularly those from disadvantaged communities, can gain life-changing international experience.
EU Relations Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds described the agreement as a “huge win,” emphasising that the programme is about “future skills, academic success, and giving the next generation access to the best possible opportunities.”
Unlike previous iterations, the 2027 comeback will cast a wider net. It isn’t just for traditional undergraduates; it includes:
- Apprentices gaining work experience in European firms.
- Adult learners pursuing new skills abroad.
- Sports coaches and youth workers engaging in cross-border training.
Universities UK has hailed the news as “fantastic,” noting that it will restore the cultural diversity and research ties that have suffered since the UK’s departure from the scheme in 2020.
The return to Erasmus+ is a poignant reminder that while borders may change, the desire for discovery remains constant. By rejoining this community of learners, the UK is reinvesting in the curiosity and ambition of its youth. It is a step that looks beyond political spreadsheets and focuses on the human value of shared knowledge, cultural empathy, and the enduring friendships that define a truly global education.
