The dream of walking through the historic halls of a British university has just become a little more attainable for talented students across India. The British Council, in partnership with the UK government’s “GREAT Britain” campaign, has officially opened the doors for the 2026-27 GREAT Scholarships programme. This year, 12 postgraduate scholarships have been ring-fenced specifically for Indian nationals, with each award offering a minimum of £10,000 to be put directly towards tuition fees for a one-year taught master’s degree.

What makes this year’s announcement particularly interesting is the breadth of subjects on offer. While traditional powerhouse subjects like STEM, Business, and Law remain central, there is a significant push towards the creative industries. Four of the participating institutions; including the Royal College of Art and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, are offering dedicated spots for the performing and creative arts. Other participating universities include the University of Bristol, Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Reading, Anglia Ruskin University, and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Rittika Chanda Parruck MBE, Director of Education India at the British Council, noted that these scholarships are about more than just financial relief. They are designed to foster a “transformative step” for students, providing access to global networking events and an alumni community that spans the globe. To be eligible, applicants must hold an Indian passport, have a strong undergraduate background, and meet the specific English language requirements of their chosen UK institution. As these scholarships are not centralised, students must apply directly to the participating university of their choice.

The GREAT Scholarships represent a vital thread in the long-standing educational tapestry between India and the UK. By easing the financial burden of international study, the programme ensures that academic brilliance, rather than just bank balances, dictates who gets to learn from the world’s leading experts. For the twelve successful scholars, this isn’t just a funding opportunity, it is the start of a lifelong connection with the UK’s global academic community and a chance to truly excel on the world stage.
