Arizona State University (ASU), USA has launched the ASU Institute of Politics, joining the ranks of Harvard and the University of Chicago in fostering future public service leaders. The institute aims to provide students with the skills, networks, and experiences needed to excel in political and leadership roles.

The initiative will be led by Ambassador Jeff Flake, a former U.S. congressman, senator, and ambassador to Turkey. As the founding director, Flake brings extensive experience and a strong political network to ASU. The institute, a project under the Office of the Executive Vice President and University Provost, will serve as a bridge between academia and public service.

“I am honoured to join ASU at this crucial time in our nation’s political evolution. The ASU Institute of Politics will prepare the next generation of leaders to navigate and strengthen our democracy,” Flake said.

The institute will provide students from diverse academic backgrounds with direct exposure to public service, policymaking, and politics. It will host expert speakers, including elected officials, journalists, and policymakers, offering mentorship and hands-on civic engagement opportunities.

Nancy Gonzales, executive vice president and university provost, emphasised the importance of free speech and critical thinking. “Our goal is to create a community where constructive dialogue thrives. By granting students access to influential networks and real-world experiences, we are investing in the future of our democracy,” she stated.

With high-value internships and career mentoring from public servants, the ASU Institute of Politics aims to position students for impactful careers in government and public policy. This initiative reinforces ASU’s commitment to fostering political engagement beyond traditional Ivy League institutions, ensuring broader access to leadership opportunities
