Jordan Harb, a student at Arizona State University (ASU), United States, has been selected for the highly competitive Schwarzman Scholarship, granting him the opportunity to pursue a one-year master’s degree in Global Affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Harb, a Global Studies and Political Science student, is among the 150 students selected from nearly 5,000 applicants worldwide, representing just 3% of all applicants. The Schwarzman Scholarship is one of the world’s most prestigious international programmes, designed to prepare future global leaders by immersing them in China’s political, economic, and cultural landscape.

Dr Kyle Mox, Associate Dean for National Scholarship Advisement at ASU, praised Harb’s achievement, stating: “Jordan’s success is a testament to the ambition and leadership potential of ASU students. His story of perseverance and dedication should inspire others in our community.”

Harb, who had no prior background in East Asian Studies, was encouraged by Dr Mox to apply and received guidance throughout the rigorous selection process. He described the final interview as an intense 25-minute session with a panel of distinguished experts, including deans from Yale and American University, business leaders, and industry executives.

Reflecting on his journey, Harb credited ASU’s diverse opportunities for his success. “The research experiences, study-abroad programmes in India and Morocco, and mentorship from professors helped shape my interest in international policy and advocacy,” he said. He also highlighted the effectiveness of reaching out to faculty for support, a strategy that set his experience apart from peers at ultra-competitive institutions.

ASU’s Executive Vice-President and University Provost, Nancy Gonzales, lauded Harb’s recognition, stating: “Jordan’s achievement exemplifies the immense potential of ASU students. With extensive academic resources and dedicated mentorship, they are empowered to pursue and accomplish their aspirations.”

The Schwarzman Scholarship continues to be a gateway for emerging leaders worldwide, providing them with invaluable exposure to China’s global influence and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
