Australia Expands Accepted English Language Tests for Visa Applications

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has widened the list of recognised English language tests for visa applications, adding three new options to the existing roster.
LanguageCert Academic, CELPIP General, and the Michigan English Test (MET) are now officially accepted for Australian visa purposes. This expansion brings the total to nine recognised tests from eight different providers, including established names such as IELTS, PTE Academic, Cambridge English, TOEFL iBT, and OET. Notably, IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are now listed as separate qualifications.
Sharon Harvey, CEO of Michigan Language Assessment, welcomed the move, calling it “a clear acknowledgment of the validity and reliability of MET” following a rigorous validation process. MET, launched in 2009 and enhanced with a secure digital version in 2021, is used globally for academic and professional certification.
Fraser Cargill, partnerships and recognitions director at LanguageCert, said the update would strengthen the company’s engagement in Australia, enabling more individuals to pursue opportunities in what he called “a dynamic country.” He emphasised the role of accessible, trusted assessments in helping candidates achieve their goals.
CELPIP General, already widely used in Canada, expressed its satisfaction at joining the list of approved Australian visa tests, noting that the recognition would help more applicants demonstrate their English proficiency for migration purposes.
The update took effect on 7 August, alongside revised score requirements for certain tests. The Department of Home Affairs has published full details on its website, advising applicants to check the latest requirements before booking their exams.
The move is seen as part of Australia’s broader effort to streamline and diversify pathways for skilled migrants, students, and other visa applicants. By recognising a wider range of language tests, the government aims to make the process more accessible to applicants worldwide while maintaining high standards of assessment.
With the latest additions, Australia reinforces its position as an attractive destination for international talent, offering more flexibility for those seeking to study, work, or settle in the country.
