Dubai has taken a major step towards solidifying its position as a global education hub, announcing the addition of three new international university branch campuses set to open in the 2025/26 academic year. This expansion brings the total number of overseas universities operating in the emirate to 40, reinforcing the city’s vision under the Dubai 2033 agenda.

The newly confirmed institutions include India’s prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, renowned for its globally ranked business programme; Lebanon’s American University of Beirut, and Saudi Arabia’s Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences. Each brings with it high academic credentials and a commitment to preparing students for the evolving global workforce.

Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) revealed a record 20% overall student enrolment increase, and a 29% rise in international student numbers for the 2024/25 academic year. As of now, 42,026 students are enrolled across 41 private universities in Dubai, a historic high for the city.

The strategic expansion is aligned with Dubai’s D33 Economic Agenda and the Education 33 Strategy, aimed at boosting educational tourism tenfold and doubling the city’s economy within the next decade. “This initiative reflects Dubai’s global stature and our commitment to building a world-class education ecosystem,” said Wafi Dawood, CEO of KHDA’s Strategic Development Sector.

By 2033, Dubai aims for 50% of university admissions to be international students, an initiative expected to contribute AED 5.6 billion (USD 1.52 billion) to the UAE’s GDP and secure Dubai’s place among the top 10 global destinations for higher education.

While the growth of international campuses has broadened access to world-class degrees within the region, concerns around limited research output remain. In response, Dubai has introduced a star rating system evaluating academic institutions on research performance and graduate outcomes. Licensing processes have also been streamlined to fast-track approvals for high-performing institutions.

As Dubai continues to compete with global education hubs, the UAE remains determined to lead the MENA region’s academic landscape and attract top-tier institutions to its shores.
