In a significant move to bolster Indian women’s participation in STEM, the Duolingo English Test (DET) has launched the DETermined Scholarship. Announced in partnership with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, this scholarship offers $30,000 to support postgraduate studies in STEM at U.S. universities accepting the DET.

Severin Hacker, CTO and co-founder of Duolingo revealed the initiative at a press conference in New Delhi. The scholarship aims to empower Indian women in STEM, encouraging them to pursue advanced education and contribute to global innovation.

Eligibility and Application Details

The scholarship is exclusively available to Indian women with a bachelor’s degree in STEM or equivalent. Applicants must demonstrate leadership abilities and a commitment to using their education to benefit India. A DET score of 120 is required, along with a solid academic background and a vision paper outlining their future contributions to STEM.

Applications will open in June 2025 via the Manthan portal. The selection process includes an application phase, a STEM impact project challenge, and a final interview.

Scholarship Amount and Impact

The DETermined Scholarship provides a one-time tuition reimbursement of $30,000, supporting Indian women in their pursuit of postgraduate STEM programs in the U.S. This initiative aligns with India’s leadership in women’s involvement in STEM fields and aims to enhance diversity and innovation.

The Indian government is committed to empowering women in STEM through this partnership with Duolingo. The scholarship is expected to open doors for talented Indian women, providing access to top-tier education and equipping them to contribute significantly to India’s vision of “Viksit Bharat.”

By making English testing more accessible, the Duolingo English Test is helping Indian women lead in global innovation and academic excellence.
