Durham University continues to shine on the global academic stage, with four of its subjects ranked in the top 100 in the prestigious World University Rankings by Subject 2025. The rankings, which evaluate universities across broad subject areas, place Durham’s Arts and Humanities at 40th, Law at 55th (improving from joint 60th last year), and Social Sciences, including Sociology, Geography, International Affairs, and Government, at 84th.

The university expressed pride in its achievements, particularly highlighting the success of Durham Law School, which is recognised as one of the best in the UK. The university’s Faculty of Social Sciences, known for its leading research on issues such as violence, abuse, climatology, and urban sustainability, also received significant acclaim. Additionally, the School of Education’s work in improving educational outcomes for disadvantaged students further underpins Durham’s strong reputation.

Durham is also making strides in supporting early career researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The university has partnered with Queen’s University Belfast and Northumbria University to form the British Academy’s Early Career Researcher Network’s (ECRN) North East and Northern Ireland (NENI) cluster. This new initiative, aimed at providing tailored support to early career researchers, will be led by Durham and is open to researchers from across the region.

Launched in 2021 in collaboration with the Wolfson Foundation, the British Academy ECRN aims to foster inclusive research, supporting scholars in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts sectors. Through this network, Durham University reaffirms its commitment to academic excellence and its ongoing contribution to the advancement of higher education in the UK.
