First UK University to Set up Campus in India

Southampton University has become the first university in the United Kingdom to open a campus in India. The letter of intent (LoI) was delivered to the university in the presence of Minister S. Jaishankar.
The University of Southampton has received approval from the Indian government to establish a fully serviced campus in India, making it the first university outside India to achieve this milestone. This development marks a new trend in Indian education, prompted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) resolution inviting the top 500 global universities to open branches in India.
An LOI was submitted to the University of Southampton today, marking the commencement of this partnership. The event was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who emphasised the significance of this development in the context of the NEP 2020.
“This aligns with the strategic priority of developing our education infrastructure to compete with the best in the world and also meets the commitments under the education joint working group of the India-UK relationship,” Dr. Jaishankar said.
He added that such initiatives would help shape Indian youth to tackle global challenges and foster international camaraderie.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice-President of International and Engagement at the university, highlighted the campus’s role in enhancing academic collaboration and supporting the Indian higher education sector.
“The University of Southampton Delhi NCR will be the first comprehensive international campus in India. This will catalyse academic partnerships, contribute to the internationalisation of the Indian higher education system, and provide the opportunity to pursue a top 100 degree in-country,” he said.
This development is a step towards realising the NEP 2020 ‘Internationalisation at Home’ concept. The education minister has also noted the growing interest of foreign universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) in partnering with and investing in India as a future talent hub.
