The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies has now opened the process of application for the Academy Scholars Programme. This programme aims at scholars who have received their PhDs within the past five years and doctoral candidates in the social sciences whose work is comparative, transnational, or domestic, but does not focus on the US and Canada. Interested and eligible candidates can apply through an online application process on the official website. The application period began on 7 June 2019, and the closing date is 19 October 2024.

It is intended for scholars whose research is interdisciplinary and demonstrates quality work in both social science disciplines and regional studies.

Fellowship Grants:

Academy Scholars are awarded a two-year non-residential postdoctoral fellowship at the Academy in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They receive an annual stipend of $80,000 (approximately Rs 66.74 lakhs), along with research support to enable them to undertake significant research projects.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must have completed their PhD or equivalent doctorate within two years of the programme’s start date of 1 August 2025. Advanced doctoral candidates are expected to provide degree conferral documentation by 30 June 2025. Current Harvard employees or those who have completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible.
On average, the programme selects five to six Academy Scholars per year for two years, with the possibility of taking a year off between the first and second years to pursue or continue a tenure-track appointment. Scholars are not permitted to seek any other form of support or grant during their fellowship term.

Application Process:

Required materials include a curriculum vitae, research proposal, scholarly writing sample, transcript from the intended PhD programme, and recommendation letters. All application materials must be submitted electronically by 20 September. Incomplete applications will be at a disadvantage in the selection process, which begins immediately after the deadline. Final decisions are expected to be announced in December 2024.
