Ireland’s Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, James Lawless, has embarked on a visit to India to bolster bilateral relations in education, innovation, and investment. The ministerial delegation will hold high-level meetings with policymakers, industry leaders, and academic institutions across Mumbai, New Delhi, and Chennai from March 15 to March 22, 2025.

The visit aligns with Ireland’s global outreach initiatives as part of the St. Patrick’s Day 2025 celebrations. It aims to strengthen collaboration between the two nations, with a focus on advancing higher education ties, expanding trade opportunities, and enhancing research partnerships.

Supported by Enterprise Ireland (EI) and IDA Ireland, the delegation will engage with key Indian stakeholders to explore avenues for cooperation in sectors such as technology, fintech, life sciences, and high-value manufacturing. Ambassador of Ireland to India, Kevin Kelly, highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, noting that India’s rapid economic growth provides fertile ground for expanded collaboration.

“Ireland and India share a dynamic and evolving partnership spanning over 75 years, built on education, research, innovation, and strong cultural ties. As India cements its position as the world’s fifth-largest economy, our engagement will further deepen across critical sectors,” Kelly stated.

Minister Lawless’ visit will focus extensively on higher education, with discussions planned to enhance student mobility, faculty exchanges, and joint curriculum development. The delegation will also explore new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Indian universities to facilitate long-term academic cooperation.

Additionally, the minister will engage with senior executives from India’s top IT, financial services, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries. The visit will mark the expansion of Irish enterprises in India, reinforcing Ireland’s position as a strategic hub for Indian businesses looking to expand into Europe.

Minister Lawless is also scheduled to participate in the prestigious Raisina Dialogue, a leading global forum on geopolitics and economic affairs, further underlining Ireland’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with India.
