Lancaster University has announced plans to establish a new campus in Bengaluru, India, joining a growing list of British institutions strengthening their presence in the country. The move coincides with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to India, marking a significant milestone in UK–India educational collaboration.

The new Bengaluru branch will be Lancaster’s first in India, adding to its global network of campuses in Ghana and Germany, as well as joint ventures in Indonesia and Malaysia. According to Professor Simon Guy, pro-vice-chancellor (global) at Lancaster University, the Bengaluru campus aims to “partner with Indian businesses, industry and local universities to spark growth, generate opportunity, and empower students to make a difference to India and the world.”

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted Lancaster permission to move forward with its proposal, with an official announcement of the ‘Letter of Intent’ expected this week at a ceremony in India. Initially, the campus will offer programmes in business, management, and computing, with plans to expand into additional disciplines in the coming years.

The Bengaluru campus will appeal to Indian students seeking a UK education without the need to study abroad. Lancaster University said it hopes to “support local partners and foster shared innovation” while enhancing its global reputation for high-quality transnational education.

The University of Surrey has also gained approval to open a campus in Gujarat’s GIFT City, underlining a broader trend of British universities establishing a stronger educational footprint in India. With more than 40 million students currently pursuing higher education in India and another 70 million places needed by 2035, the expansion aligns with both countries’ ambitions to deepen ties in education, trade, and innovation.

UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the wave of new campuses in India “will give more young people the chance to benefit from a UK education while delivering real returns for our universities at home.”
