A recent survey has delivered a resounding message from London’s business leaders: international graduates are not just welcome; they are essential for keeping the capital, and the UK, competitive on the global stage.

Conducted by London Higher, the survey of over 1,000 business executives revealed near-unanimous support, with a staggering 90% backing the city’s international graduate workforce. For 62% of respondents, this global talent is deemed absolutely essential, with a further 28% calling it highly important. Only a small minority felt otherwise.

The findings decisively counter the argument that international talent takes opportunities away from domestic workers. In fact, a huge 93% of businesses believe global graduates help to plug critical skills gaps in their industries, with just 4% fearing a reduction in opportunities for UK talent. The benefits don’t stop there: 89% also credit these workers with driving innovation.

Liz Hutchinson, Chief Executive of London Higher, emphasised the human element behind the figures: “Global graduates give London its competitive edge. Every sector of our economy benefits from the talent and energy they bring. This research shows that they don’t take opportunities away – they help create them.”

This strong endorsement arrives at a crucial time, as the government debates potentially restrictive immigration policies, including a proposed shortening of the Graduate Route visa. Business leaders are sending a clear warning, with over half stating they would consider relocating operations outside the UK if access to this talent pool were further restricted.

John Dickie, CEO of BusinessLDN, stressed the need for the UK to “do all it can to remain attractive to highly skilled individuals from across the globe.” It is seen as a simple matter of self-interest, with 91% viewing international workers as crucial for London’s competitiveness against rivals like New York, Singapore, and Paris.

The message from the heart of the capital’s economy is unambiguous: the UK’s international graduates are a fundamental component of its prosperity. They are celebrated for their ability to fill immediate skills shortages, fuel innovation, and strengthen the nation’s hand in global competition. For policymakers considering tighter controls, this survey serves as a powerful reminder that an open door to global talent is a direct investment in the future strength and dynamism of the British economy.
