Malaysia is forecasting a surge in international students from Central Asia and Africa, according to key figures in the country’s education sector. Novie Tajuddin, CEO of Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), shared this prediction at the 10th annual EURIE conference in Istanbul, where he revealed that the country had seen a 26% increase in international applications over the past two years.

While Malaysia’s international student body is currently dominated by students from China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, and India, Tajuddin pointed to a shift in recruitment trends. In particular, he highlighted the growing potential in Central Asia and Africa for future student growth. Countries such as Egypt, Yemen, Sudan, Japan, and Nigeria have also remained strong contributors to Malaysia’s international student pool.

“The key to expansion lies in countries eager to grow,” Tajuddin explained, adding that the changing geopolitical landscape in recent years has led to shifts in Malaysia’s international recruitment strategy.

As part of its efforts to streamline the international student process, Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education is introducing a centralised application system, designed to authenticate and standardise qualifications. The move aims to provide a more efficient and secure admissions process for students.

In addition to the centralised system, Malaysia is rolling out innovative initiatives to enhance the student experience. This includes a “fast lane” at the airport to ensure a smoother arrival for international students, further demonstrating the country’s commitment to attracting global talent.

With growing interest from regions like Central Asia and Africa, Malaysia’s education sector is positioning itself as a key destination for international students seeking quality higher education.
