Monash University has announced a major expansion in Malaysia, confirming plans to open a second state-of-the-art campus in Kuala Lumpur by 2032. The development marks the university’s largest-ever investment in education and research, solidifying Australia’s growing academic footprint in Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.

The new Monash University Malaysia campus will be developed in partnership with TRX City, the master developer of the Tun Razak Exchange—Malaysia’s new international financial district. Valued at RM2.8 billion (USD $1 billion), the investment reflects Monash’s long-term commitment to deepening cross-border collaboration between Malaysia and Australia.

Once operational, the campus will accommodate up to 22,500 students and 1,700 staff. According to the university, it will feature advanced research centres focused on energy transition, health, artificial intelligence, and data science. The location in Kuala Lumpur’s financial district is expected to further enhance industry partnerships and innovation-driven growth.

The announcement was made in Kuala Lumpur by Monash University’s vice-chancellor and president, Professor Sharon Pickering, alongside Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysia’s Minister of Higher Education, Zambry Abd Kadir. Albanese described the project as a “significant opportunity to showcase Australia’s world-class higher education sector overseas”, emphasising that it will strengthen regional ties and create future pathways for students in both countries.

The new campus will operate in addition to Monash’s existing Malaysian campus, established in 1998 as the country’s first foreign university campus. Programmes at the current campus will continue without disruption.

More than 35 new courses are expected to be introduced, including programmes in AI and cyber security, digitisation, climate sustainability, healthcare, semiconductor technology, finance, and advanced manufacturing—fields identified as priorities for Malaysia’s future workforce.

TRX City CEO Azmar Talib noted that the partnership will boost Malaysia’s competitiveness within ASEAN, while Monash University Malaysia’s president Adeeba Kamarulzaman highlighted the university’s mission to deliver “world-class education at scale” with a strong focus on sustainability, digital transformation, and green energy.

The university’s projections estimate that the new campus will contribute AUD 6.5 billion (RM19.1 billion) to the Malaysian economy over the next decade through infrastructure development, innovation, workforce expansion, and community impact.
