New York University (NYU) has announced a historic surge in applications for its Class of 2029, surpassing 120,000 for the first time in its history. The university’s applications have increased by 3% compared to the previous year, reflecting growing interest in its diverse academic offerings and global presence.

This year, NYU received 120,633 applications, with nearly 25,000 coming through Early Decision (ED), marking a 10% increase in early applications compared to last year. The university has extended offers of admission to approximately 6,500 first-year students who will join the NYU community across its campuses in New York, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi this autumn.

The surge in applications is part of a broader trend, with NYU seeing its application numbers more than double over the last decade. MJ Knoll-Finn, NYU’s senior vice president of enrollment management & student success, expressed excitement at the growth, noting, “It is exciting and humbling to have so many wonderful, talented students apply to NYU from all over the US and the world.” She attributed the increase to NYU’s global reach, wide-ranging academic offerings, and commitment to affordability.

This record number of applications underscores NYU’s strong appeal to students worldwide, especially those seeking a rigorous and internationally connected education. With a variety of academic programmes and campuses spanning three continents, NYU continues to attract top talent eager to build bridges with peers across the globe.

In addition to this achievement, NYU is also making headlines in the film industry, with 14 nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards, further solidifying its reputation as a leading institution for both academic and creative excellence.
