South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas led a high-profile delegation to India, focusing on career opportunities for Indian students studying in Adelaide. The visit, which included officials from StudyAdelaide and three university Vice-Chancellors, aimed to strengthen education and business ties between India and Australia.

Speaking in New Delhi, Premier Malinauskas highlighted the growing sectors in South Australia, including health, renewable energy, space, agriculture, and critical technologies. He emphasised that Indian students studying in Adelaide could benefit from these expanding industries through employment opportunities both during and after their studies.

“I am pleased to be in New Delhi for my first visit as Premier of South Australia. Our collaboration between education and industry ensures graduates are ready for future jobs globally,” Malinauskas said.

StudyAdelaide Chief Executive Jane Johnston outlined the comprehensive support available for international students in South Australia. She highlighted the Employment Connect initiative, which provides job assistance to students from the moment they arrive.

“Through Job Shop, students can apply for part-time or casual jobs even before arriving in South Australia. In the last two years, over 400 Indian students have benefitted from our employment programmes,” Johnston stated.

Strengthening India–South Australia Ties

The delegation’s visit marks a significant step in enhancing cultural, educational, and economic connections between South Australia and India. The StudyAdelaide event provided a platform to connect Indian students with career opportunities in Adelaide, while discussions with Indian industry leaders aimed to boost future collaborations.

India has remained the largest source country for international students in South Australia since 2022. As of November 2024, the state recorded 16,162 Indian student enrolments, a 4% increase from the previous year. Indian students make up 28% of South Australia’s total international student population.

With this visit, South Australia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Indian students and strengthening its education partnerships with India. The collaboration is set to provide Indian students with better career prospects in South Australia’s booming industries.
