Sri Lanka is set to welcome its first-ever UK university campus, with the University of West London (UWL) announcing the launch of its Colombo branch — a milestone moment in the country’s higher education landscape. The move follows years of successful collaboration between UWL and the American Education Centre (ANC) in Colombo and Kandy, where the partnership has delivered degree programmes in business administration, psychology, and IT.

The new campus will broaden its academic offering to include law, computing, and biosciences, aligning with Sri Lanka’s Vision 2048 — a national plan to build a resilient, knowledge-driven, and globally competitive economy. UWL says the expansion will offer Sri Lankan students access to British academic standards, international degree pathways, and a globally recognised career-oriented education without leaving their home country.

“The launch of the University of West London’s Sri Lanka branch campus is an important step in our mission to deliver outstanding, career-focused higher education internationally,” said Professor Peter John, Vice-Chancellor and President of UWL. He added that nearly 5,000 Sri Lankan students have already graduated with UWL degrees, underlining the success of the partnership.

Expected to open after securing regulatory approvals in both the UK and Sri Lanka, the Colombo campus will focus on improving graduate employability and retaining local talent. “This development gives Sri Lankan students the opportunity to study at a world-class British university without leaving home,” said Jagath Alwis, Chairman of ANC, highlighting the initiative’s potential to strengthen Sri Lanka’s higher education ecosystem.

The new campus will join UWL’s international network, which includes branches in Ras Al Khaimah (UAE) and Athens (Greece). With a $1.1 billion private education market and over 60,000 students pursuing transnational degrees annually, Sri Lanka is rapidly emerging as a major hub for UK higher education. The launch of UWL’s campus reinforces the country’s growing reputation as a regional education destination in South Asia.
