In a proud moment for British academia, four researchers from the University of Oxford have been elected as international members of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). This prestigious recognition is among the highest honours a scientist can receive and celebrates their continued excellence in original scientific research.

The NAS recently announced its list of newly elected members, comprising 120 from the United States and 30 international scholars. Among the latter, the University of Oxford had a significant presence with four of its leading academics selected.

The honourees from Oxford include:

  • Véronique Gouverneur, Waynflete Professor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry
  • Desmond King, Andrew Mellon Professor of American Government, Department of Politics and International Relations
  • Andrew McMichael, Emeritus Professor of Molecular Medicine, Centre for Immuno-Oncology, Nuffield Department of Medicine

Expressing her gratitude, Professor Gouverneur said, “I am thrilled to receive this recognition, and grateful to all members of my team who serve society through science. Becoming a member of the National Academy of Sciences is a privilege.”

Professor Desmond King echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This great honour attests to the wonderfully supportive environment at Oxford University. NAS membership presents new opportunities to collaborate on high-level social science research with US colleagues.”

The announcement comes as the United Kingdom continues to bolster its global reputation in scientific research and higher education, further reinforcing its appeal to international students looking to study in the UK.

Meanwhile, Oxford University also announced a unique initiative under its CO2RE programme, where seven artists will be funded to explore greenhouse gas removal through creative projects. Natasha Martirosian, Research Associate at CO2RE, highlighted the cultural importance of integrating science and art, noting that the initiative aims to deepen public understanding of environmental innovations.

These recent recognitions and creative efforts reflect the University of Oxford’s leadership in both academic excellence and interdisciplinary innovation.
