UK Overtakes US as Top Destination for Business Education

The United States has lost its long-held crown as the leading destination for business education, with the United Kingdom taking the top spot and Germany rising sharply to second place, according to a new international study.
The survey, conducted by education consultancy CarringtonCrisp, marks a significant shift in global student preferences. The UK, now regarded as the most attractive and welcoming country for business education, secured first place despite recent government policies tightening immigration and plans to shorten the Graduate Route.
Germany, which jumped from fifth in 2024 to second in 2025, has become increasingly popular with international students due to its perceived affordability, favourable visa policies and strong post-graduation work opportunities. Nearly two-thirds of respondents said it was easy to obtain a visa to study in Germany, compared with less than half for the US.
The US, which had dominated the rankings for five of the last seven years, fell to third place. Rising tuition fees, visa hurdles and policy uncertainty under the Trump government have contributed to its decline. Almost three-quarters of students expressed concern about the high cost of studying in America, while one in five cited difficulties with visas and job prospects.
France and Australia completed the top five, underlining the increasingly competitive global landscape for international education. Affordability and career outcomes are now the most important considerations for students, with 91% citing cost as their primary concern in a recent ApplyBoard survey.
Andrew Crisp, co-founder of CarringtonCrisp, said: “Perception is everything. Even slight changes in cost, policy or opportunity can have a profound effect on where students choose to study.”
The survey of more than 2,000 prospective students across 36 countries highlights shifting dynamics in student mobility. While the UK and Germany have gained ground, traditional leaders such as the US are now facing challenges in maintaining their appeal.
