The University of Florida (UF), in the United States is set to acquire an advanced version of its HiPerGator supercomputer, making it one of the first higher education institutions in the USA to own such a powerful machine. The Board of Trustees approved a $24 million investment for the upgrade, which is expected to be delivered to UF’s Gainesville campus in the first half of 2025.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mori Hosseini, highlighted UF’s commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation, stating, “With this new groundbreaking technology, UF will continue to lead the way nationally and bring tremendous value to the state of Florida.” The new supercomputer, co-founded by UF alumnus Chris Malachowsky, is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and will further enhance the university’s capabilities in AI research.

The upgraded HiPerGator will provide students, faculty, staff, and researchers across Florida with access to one of the world’s most powerful AI-based supercomputers. Interim Provost Joe Glover expressed excitement about how the technology will advance UF’s leadership in AI and its impact on various sectors of the state’s economy.

UF’s Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Elias G. Eldayrie, noted, “This represents a monumental step forward in our commitment to fostering innovation and discovery across all disciplines.” The current AI projects on the existing HiPerGator will be transferred to the upgraded machine, ensuring continued progress in cutting-edge research at UF.

This acquisition positions UF as a leader in AI and innovation, further cementing its role in solving some of the world’s greatest challenges while benefiting the state of Florida and beyond.
