The University of Surrey has announced plans to establish a branch campus in India’s GIFT City, Gujarat’s special economic zone (SEZ), in collaboration with GUS Global Services (GGS). This strategic initiative aims to expand the university’s presence in India, with a focus on business, international finance, computer science, and cyber-security—fields aligned with GIFT City’s vision of fostering innovation in finance and technology.

Under the partnership, the University of Surrey will oversee all academic and teaching aspects of the campus, while GGS will manage ancillary services, including student enrolment and campus operations. The project is in the advanced stages of pre-delivery and awaits regulatory approval from Gujarat’s International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) under the International Branch Campus Regulations.

Lu Max, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative:

“The University of Surrey campus at GIFT City will be a shining example of British educational excellence, contributing to transnational education in an increasingly globalised world.”
Max also highlighted the synergy between India’s expanding financial sector and the university’s academic strengths in business, finance, and computer science.

The initiative will provide Indian students with access to world-class education without the need to study abroad, aligning with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises the globalisation and internationalisation of higher education.

The University of Surrey joins other institutions, such as Wollongong and Deakin, which have already established campuses in GIFT City. Additionally, UK universities including Coventry University and Queen’s University Belfast are also planning branch campuses in the SEZ, reinforcing its reputation as an emerging hub for international education.
