University of Sussex Honours Noel Tata with Honorary Doctorate

The University of Sussex has conferred an honorary doctorate upon Noel Tata, a distinguished business leader of the Tata Group and an alumnus of the UK university. The honour was presented by Professor Sasha Roseneil, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sussex, at a special ceremony in Mumbai.

Noel Tata, who graduated from the university in 1978 with a degree in Economics, expressed his gratitude, stating, “My time at Sussex was a rich and stimulating intellectual experience that had a formative influence on me. It is a privilege to receive this honorary degree.”

Professor Roseneil commended Tata’s contributions to global business and ethical leadership, saying, “Noel Tata is a highly respected leader, and the University of Sussex celebrates his impact on the Indian economy and communities across India and beyond.”

With over 40 years of leadership experience, Noel Tata has played a pivotal role in shaping Tata Group’s retail sector, particularly Trent, which expanded to include brands like Westside, Zudio, and Star Bazaar. He holds key positions across Tata companies, including Chairman of Voltas, Trent, Tata Investment Corporation, and Tata International, as well as Vice Chairman of Titan and Tata Steel. In 2024, he was appointed Chairman of Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the group.

The University of Sussex, known for recognising influential global figures, also awarded an honorary degree to Caroline Lucas, former UK Green Party leader and MP for Brighton Pavilion. She expressed her appreciation, stating, “It is truly heartwarming to have my work recognised in this way.”

This latest honour reflects the University of Sussex’s commitment to acknowledging outstanding contributions in business, leadership, and social impact.
