University of Sydney Shines in QS Subject Rankings 2025

The University of Sydney, Australia has secured top positions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, reinforcing Australia’s academic excellence. The university ranked first in Australia in nine disciplines and placed 35 subjects in the global top 50, with five securing spots in the top 20 worldwide.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott lauded the achievement, stating, “As one of many indicators of research and teaching excellence, I congratulate our staff on our continuing success in the prestigious QS subject rankings.” He highlighted the university’s $100 million investment in its Horizon Fellows program, supporting researchers tackling global challenges in climate change, health, and sustainability.

Additionally, the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator (SBA), a pioneering partnership with the Sydney Local Health District and the NSW Government, aims to fast-track medical research and innovation. “The SBA will revolutionise healthcare, collaborating with industry and start-ups as part of a world-leading hospital and tech innovation ecosystem,” Scott added.

Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Julie Cairney emphasised the university’s strong performance in academic reputation and research impact, saying, “Our ability and potential to translate our research into real-world solutions is reflected in these results.”

The QS Subject Rankings 2025 evaluated over 5,200 universities across five broad subject areas and 55 disciplines. The University of Sydney ranked first in Australia in key fields such as Anatomy and Physiology, Computer Science, Communication and Media Studies, Mathematics, and Nursing.

Meanwhile, the University of Melbourne also excelled, ranking in the global top 50 across all broad subject areas. It notably climbed eight places in Natural Sciences, reaching 49th, and secured 15th place in Life Sciences and Medicine.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Professor Emma Johnston acknowledged the rankings as a testament to academic excellence, stating, “Our students can be confident that they will gain valuable skills that will prepare them well for their future careers.”

The latest QS rankings reaffirm Australia’s position as a leading destination for higher education and research.
