The United States is poised to dramatically widen its existing travel ban to encompass more than 30 countries, a move confirmed by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that has immediately sent shockwaves through the international student and immigrant community, including those based in the UK.

Speaking in a recent interview, Secretary Noem stated that the President is ‘continuing to evaluate countries’ and confirmed the expanded list would be “over 30,” though she declined to name the specific nations facing new restrictions. She justified the drastic expansion on the grounds that countries without “a stable government… or a country that can sustain itself and tell us who those individuals are and help us vet them, why should we allow people from that country to come here to the United States?”

This aggressive stance builds upon a current set of restrictions implemented in June, which already targeted citizens from 19 nations, severely impacting or barring entry for immigrants and non-immigrants, including students, tourists, and business visitors. The latest escalation follows a high-profile security incident involving a suspected Afghan national, which prompted the administration to announce plans to “permanently pause migration from all third world countries.”

The announcement is causing significant distress. Education leaders have quickly pointed out the immense “chaos and uncertainty” this creates, arguing that the lack of clear information is deeply unsettling. Zuzana Cepla Wootson of the Presidents’ Alliance warned of an “even stronger chilling effect” that will deter prospective students far beyond the targeted nations, as many will simply decide the US is too risky or unwelcoming a destination. Furthermore, the administration has already ratcheted up pressure on the existing 19 countries by pausing green card and naturalisation applications, leaving individuals already in the US in a distressing state of limbo.

The impending expansion of the US travel ban represents a sharp shift towards stricter, more exclusive immigration policies. While the administration frames this as a necessary measure for national security, for thousands of international students, scholars, and families, the move is being viewed as a deeply unsettling and potentially life-altering blow. Until a formal list of the “over 30” countries is published, the global community will remain in a holding pattern, desperately awaiting clarity on a policy that promises to reshape the landscape of international movement and study in the United States.
