Vietnam has introduced a new visa-free entry policy allowing citizens from 12 countries to stay for up to 45 days for tourism, regardless of passport type. The move, announced under Government Resolution 229/NQ-CP on 8 August, is aimed at boosting tourism and international cooperation.

The eligible countries are Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. The policy will be in effect from 15 August 2025 until 14 August 2028 as part of Vietnam’s tourism promotion and development programme.

This new regulation replaces Government Resolution 11/NQ-CP issued on 15 January 2025, which had granted visa exemptions to citizens of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland, and will become invalid from 15 August 2025.

In a parallel move on the same day, the Government issued Decree 221/2025/ND-CP, introducing a limited-term visa waiver scheme for specially designated foreign nationals whose presence benefits Vietnam’s socio-economic growth. This includes guests invited by the country’s top leaders, high-level officials, and provincial authorities.

Eligible individuals also include scholars, scientists, university professors, chief engineers, and experts in digital technology; investors and executives from major global corporations; and cultural, artistic, sports, and tourism figures with significant public influence. Vietnam’s honorary consuls abroad, guests of recognised research institutes and universities, and other individuals approved by the Minister of Public Security may also qualify for this special exemption.

Officials say the policy reflects Vietnam’s commitment to attracting high-value visitors, expanding its international tourism footprint, and creating favourable conditions for cultural, academic, and economic exchanges. With tourism playing a key role in the country’s post-pandemic recovery strategy, the 45-day visa waiver is expected to make Vietnam a more competitive and appealing destination in Southeast Asia.
