Virginia, US – William & Mary has introduced two new degree programmes this fall to address the growing demand for public health and human health sciences professionals. The university’s Department of Kinesiology in Arts & Sciences will now offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in human health & physiology and a choice between a B.S. or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in public health.

“These new degree offerings underscore our mission to prepare students to be forward-thinking leaders,” said Provost Peggy Agouris. “By equipping them with the tools to improve human health and advance public health initiatives, we are shaping a better future for our communities and our world.”

The launch comes amid increasing student interest in careers that address complex health challenges. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, public health and health sciences careers are expected to grow significantly in the coming decade. The new courses at William & Mary aim to equip students with the skills needed to address chronic disease prevention, healthcare innovation, and public health initiatives.

“Students are increasingly drawn to fields where they can make a tangible difference in people’s lives,” said M. Brennan Harris, chair and Ken Kambis Professor of Kinesiology. “These degrees will prepare them to tackle pressing health issues.”

For international students, the B.S. in human health & physiology could be particularly valuable, as it is listed under STEM programmes in the federal Classification of Instructional Programs. This designation allows foreign students to apply for a two-year visa extension after graduation, providing them with more opportunities in the US job market.

The curriculum will include courses in physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and health assessment, offering students hands-on experience in key health-related fields.

With these new programmes, William & Mary continues to strengthen its commitment to interdisciplinary education and workforce-ready training, ensuring that students are well-prepared to meet the evolving healthcare challenges in the US and beyond.
