Macquarie University in Australia has been awarded $5.4 million in Commonwealth medical research grants, supporting three major health projects. The funding will aid research into breast cancer biomarkers, mental health diagnostics, and the evaluation of Australia’s MyMedicare patient registration scheme.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Professor Sakkie Pretorius, praised the grants, stating that they highlight the university’s commitment to impactful medical research. “These studies showcase the variety of important health and medical research underway at Macquarie University,” he said.

Professor Yuling Wang has secured a $2.77 million NHMRC Investigator Grant to explore biomarkers for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a highly aggressive form of cancer currently lacking reliable diagnostic tools. Associate Professor Miri Forbes will receive $1.62 million for mental health research under the NHMRC Investigator Grant (Emerging Leadership 2).

$1.35M Grant to Protect Australia’s Avocado Industry

In addition to medical research, Macquarie University has been granted $1.35 million to safeguard Australia’s avocado industry from pests and diseases. The project, led by researchers from Macquarie University, the NSW Department of Primary Industries, Southern Cross University, and Agreco Australia, aims to develop sustainable solutions for avocado farmers across Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales.

Chief Investigator Dr Bishwo Mainali emphasised the importance of the research, stating, “We’re aiming to develop specific solutions for local conditions to help farmers use fewer chemicals while keeping their trees healthy.”

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Samuel Muller, added that the research integrates scientific expertise with practical farming knowledge, ensuring a sustainable future for Australia’s avocado industry.

Macquarie University continues to strengthen its research footprint in Australia with these significant grants, reinforcing its role as a leader in scientific and medical innovation.
