The University of Sussex, England, has introduced the UK’s first undergraduate degree in climate justice, responding to increasing demand for climate-focused education. The course, set to begin in 2026, aims to equip students with the skills needed to address climate change and social justice challenges.

With 72% of students aged 14-18 expressing interest in climate education, Sussex’s new BA in Climate Justice, Sustainability and Development aligns with growing demand for social sciences-based climate courses. Professor Geert De Neve, Head of the School of Global Studies at Sussex, stated, “This course reflects Sussex’s commitment to educating students who can drive positive global impact.”

The programme will provide interdisciplinary training in activism, politics, and environmental human rights. Students will engage in real-world problem-solving, local projects, and green career-focused activities. Lecturer Will Lock highlighted the course’s innovative assessment methods, including podcasts and public communication projects instead of traditional essays.

A LinkedIn study found that candidates with green skills are 54.6% more likely to secure jobs, reinforcing the course’s relevance in the UK job market. Sussex’s initiative underscores the country’s commitment to sustainability and climate justice education.
