University of Southampton to Launch First UK Branch Campus in India
The University of Southampton is set to establish a branch campus in India, becoming the first UK university to be granted government permission. In collaboration with Oxford International Education Group (OIEG), the new campus will be located in Gurgaon, near Delhi, and is slated to welcome its first intake of students in 2025.
Awarded a licence in August, the University of Southampton’s Delhi campus will offer four undergraduate and two graduate degree programmes. According to OIEG, the initiative represents a “historic public-private partnership” and aligns with India’s New Education Policy, which aims to enhance transnational education.
OIEG will provide financial support and the necessary services to establish the campus, featuring a blend of international and domestic faculty. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to transnational education as a strategic priority for both the University and OIEG.
“This launch is a major step in our international strategy, highlighting global engagement and positive social impact,” said Andrew Atherton, vice-president for international and engagement at the University of Southampton. “Our Delhi campus is a significant investment in India and offers students the opportunity to earn a world-class degree without leaving their country.”
OIEG’s CEO, Lil Bremermann-Richard, noted that public-private collaborations will play a growing role in shaping higher education in the UK and globally. The partnership aims to blend the best of UK and Indian education, providing local students with access to world-class learning and research opportunities without needing to study abroad.
